How to Avoid a Rear-end Collision in Orlando

It’s an all too familiar sight, seeing a vehicle plow into another vehicle from behind. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of car accident in Orlando and in the United States. Nationwide, there are more than 2.5 million rear-end collisions each year. Luckily, they are also one of the least fatal types of accidents that occur on our roads.

The driver who hits the vehicle in front of him is generally at fault in the majority of Florida rear-end collisions. The best way to prevent injury from a rear-end collision is to avoid being involved in one altogether. The following are some steps you can take to avoid a rear-end collision.

  • Adjust and use your mirrors.Properly adjusted mirrors can enhance your side and rear vision, allowing you to spot and identify other drivers. Every time you enter your vehicle, double check and adjust your mirrors to the correct positions. As you are driving, use your mirrors to keep an eye out and make appropriate adjustments as other drivers approach.
  • Brake wisely.Be conscious of what is happening ahead of you. Allow yourself adequate time to gradually slow, as opposed to coming to a sudden halt. This will allow the person behind you to see and react to your braking.
  • Don’t allow tailgating. If you notice a driver following too closely behind you, gradually slow down so that the tailgater can go around you. If that does not work, try changing lanes or pulling onto the shoulder when you are safely able to do so.
