How to Help Children Cope After a Florida Car Accident

Each year, there are hundreds of Florida children who are involved in a car crash in Orlando and other major cities. These accidents come quickly and can leave a child, just as an adult, in a state of panic and shock. The consequences after the initial crash are often times worse than the event itself and as children struggle to understand what happened, they need a parental figure there to help.

If you have been in a car accident in Florida with your child, here are a few things you can do as a parent to help them cope and overcome their fears.

  • Make yourself available to listen—You may not know what triggers your child’s need to talk about the Florida car crash but when they want to discuss it, it is important that you are able to listen to them. If your child brings up the crash on her own, stop what you are doing and sit down to listen to her thoughts and concerns then address them as calmly and rationally as you can.
  • Ask your child questions—If your child is not coming forward to talk about the Florida auto accident on their own, but you can see signs that he is nervous and apprehensive, it is a good idea to start the conversation yourself and ask him how he is coping with everything. Your children may need you as their parent to open up to them first before they are willing to talk about it.
  • Get extra support—If after one month your child is still having fears related to the car accident, you may want to get extra help from a counselor or an outside resource. By allowing your children to talk to a stranger about their feelings, they may feel more open to discussing what is bothering them and may find new ways to cope.
