Have Road Rash From a Florida Motorcycle Wreck? Here’s What to Do

If you’ve been involved in a motorcycle crash in Florida that sent you skidding against the surface of the road, there’s a good possibility that you’re suffering from a painful case of road rash, also known as road burn. These scrapes and bruises, which can be quite severe, are a common outcome of motorcycle accidents, since there’s nothing to prevent a motorcyclist from making contact with the road.

We recommend that you see a doctor as soon as possible after the crash. A medical professional can treat your injuries and prescribe medications, if necessary, to help you be more comfortable. He or she can also document the extent of your injuries so there’s a record of them for insurance and legal purposes.

In some instances, road rash is so severe it requires stitches or perhaps even surgery. In other cases, the injuries are relatively minor and can be cared for at home. Here are a few suggestions that can help you heal:

  • Use an antibiotic ointment with a pain reliever.Your doctor may have already prescribed a specific topical treatment and/or pain medication, but if not, there are a number of over-the-counter ointments that can help reduce your risk for infection while also serving as a topical pain reliever. Ointments are also available that can help minimize the risk of scarring and promote faster healing.
  • Gently wash your wounds daily. While this might be painful at first, it’s important to keep your wounds clean and free of external contaminants that can cause infection. Cleanse your wounds gently with soap and water each day to help remove any lingering dirt or debris. Be careful not to push any foreign matter deeper into the wounds.
  • Cover your wound with a sterile, breathable dressing.Your wounds need access to air, but you also want to keep them clean. Use ointment to keep gauze dressings from sticking to the wounds or use a nonstick dressing such as those used in treating burns. Change the dressing at least daily to prevent infection and help your wounds heal as quickly as possible.
