Texting While Driving Should Be Banned to Reduce Florida Car Crashes

Florida is one of only six states that do not have a ban of some sort in place against texting while driving. At Auto Justice Attorney, we see far too many clients who have been involved in Orlando auto accidents as a result of this dangerous behavior. In an effort to reduce the number of car crashes in our state, we’ve decided to make our case for why texting while driving should be banned.

  • Your braking time could be slower. As you glance at your phone to read a message or make sure your message is reading correctly, you take your eyes off the road. If, in the few seconds that you are looking down, the car in front of you brakes, you run the risk of not being able to stop in time and causing a Florida car accident.
  • You are manually engaged.Unlike when you are talking to friends or singing along with the radio as you drive, texting not only takes your eyes off the road, but it also takes your hands away from the wheel. There simply is no safe way to go about texting while driving.
  • Multitasking can slow your reaction time. Some studies have shown that people have a difficult time multitasking, even when they’re not behind the wheel. As you drive, your primary focus should be on the road. If you’re trying to send a text message or email while you’re driving, you cannot pay full attention to your responsibilities as a driver. When your focus is divided, your reaction time most likely is not what it should be, which can substantially increase your risk of causing an accident.

Texting while driving is never safe, and it’s a sure way to raise the odds that you’ll be involved in a car accident in Florida. No text message is so important that it’s worth putting yourself and others on the road in danger.

There’s a good chance that Florida will eventually join the majority of other states and make it illegal to text while driving.
