Bad Road Conditions: Tips for Avoiding a Florida Car Crash

Have you ever been caught in a sudden downpour while driving? Or, have you had to quickly maneuver through unexpected debris on the road? If so, you are not alone. Many of our clients come to us after being involved in a car accident in Orlando that occurred as a result of unavoidable hazards. It’s true that you can’t always avoid unpredictable dangers such as these, but there are precautions you can take to help prevent or reduce the risk of getting into an accident because of them.

Here are a few tips that can help you contend with unanticipated bad road conditions:

  • Heavy rainfall. One of the most common situations that can happen to drivers during a heavy rain is hydroplaning. If you begin to lose control of your car because of water standing on the road, reduce your risk of a Florida car accident by easing your foot off the accelerator. Reducing your speed will give you more control over your vehicle. Avoid braking heavily, and anticipate turns with care so you don’t cut corners sharply.
  • Icy streets.Even in Florida, the streets can occasionally become icy. Because this usually happens at night, when the temperature drops, icy patches on the road can be hard to see. If you do start to slip on an ice patch and your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, do not pump your brakes. Instead, apply steady pressure to the brake pedal, which will activate the system. It is also important in these conditions to leave plenty of room between your car and any vehicles you might be following.
  • Flooding.Flash floods can create a very dangerous situation for drivers. If you notice that the water level on the road is rising, pull over. Never attempt to drive through a flooded area. You can’t tell how deep the water might be, and you’d be surprised how quickly a car can be washed away.
