When we think of the Fourth of July, we think of fireworks, family barbecues and celebrating our nation’s independence. But with all of the fun and patriotism aside, it is also traditionally the holiday with the most fires. These fires are often the result of fireworks, decorations and lack of safety and supervision.
Here are some firework safety tips to remember this Fourth of July:
- Have a fire extinguisher easily accessible.
- Have water buckets and a garden hose available.
- Keep Fourth of July decorations (particularly those with smaller parts or dangerous chemicals) out of reach from children, pets and outside birds.
- Make sure and set up your Fourth of July decorations a safe distance from the actual fireworks. This area should be roped off and completely away from children. Always have a bucket of water nearby for quick disposal.
- If you are lighting fireworks make sure the area is free of bushes, dry grass, trees, streamers, balloons, flammable helium and other fire hazard materials. Wear protective eye gear, light one firework at a time, and move away quickly. These should be lit in a clear area, away from buildings and vehicles. Never re-light a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
- When disposing of Fourth of July decorations and fireworks, make sure these are completely cooled down and free of heat. Not doing this properly will surely start a fire. Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them and placing them in a metal trash can far away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
- When it comes to children- remove small pieces of balloons, fireworks, and other items they could choke on. Fourth of July decorations, if not disposed of properly can end up strangling or choking a small child. A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities. Children should NEVER be given fireworks.
- Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Keep alcohol away from children and animals.
- Avoid illegal fireworks. These are illegal due to the increased danger involved with certain types of fireworks. Here is a list of fireworks to avoid:
- Large Re-loadable Mortar Shells
- Cherry Bombs
- Ariel Bombs
- M-80 Salutes
- Large Firecrackers
Always Use Extra Caution Around Fireworks
