There has been a recent spike in drowsy driving related fatalities in the early morning hours, according to a recent study. The deadliest span of the early morning is between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. The second and third deadliest hours were the hours just before and after, 5 a.m. – 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. – 8 a.m. according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recent study contradicts past reports that drowsy driving accidents peak in the nighttime hours.
The most common roadways where drowsy driving crashes occur are on busy interstates. This was attributed to the fact that drivers are traveling at higher speeds and there are a greater number of vehicles traveling on these roadways. Sleep-related crash fatalities accounted for five percent of all deaths on interstates. The report also found that utility trucks were the most common type of vehicle involved in sleep-related auto accidents. They were followed by pickup trucks and vans.
The five counties with the highest number of fatal drowsy driving accidents were: San Bernardino County, California; Bexar County, Texas; Riverside County, California; Los Angeles County, California; and Maricopa County, Arizona.
