There are “multiple impacts” involved in a fatal teen car crash, according to Philip Stuart, a retired Florida State Trooper. His new initiative, Informing More Pupils About Auto Crash Tragedies, or IMPAACT, is set to launch March 14-18, the week before spring break.
IMPAACT places displays of wrecked cars, marked off by police tape, at area high school campuses to serve as “vivid, visual reminders of what can happen when you’re driving 6,000 pounds of moving steel and glass,” said Stuart.
Thousands of high-school and college students will be out of school, traveling all over the state and making their way to Florida’s sandy beaches. These students are likely to be riding in cars driven by other teens, at least half of who admit – surfing, talking, or texting – on a mobile phone while behind the wheel. One-third of teenage deaths result from motor vehicle crashes. Sixteen year-olds are more likely to crash than drivers of any age.
It is important that parents, teachers, law-enforcement officials, and perhaps most importantly, other students, communicate the importance of staying safe during Spring Break. Public safety videos have been created to offer tips to students about staying safe, such as wearing sunblock and fastening seat-belts. Creating meaningful memories relies on having the ability to look back on them later.
