The Increased Risk of Auto Accidents on Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most dangerous days of the year to be on the road, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2012 alone, 38 percent of car crash fatalities were the result of drunk driving. The number of car crash fatalities on Super Bowl Sunday has been as high as 43 percent in recent years.
Due to the increased risk of car accidents, the Florida Highway Patrol is urging party goers and party throwers to take caution and ensure everyone has a designated driver this Sunday for Super Bowl 50. If you are unable to find a designated driver for the evening, there are transportation options such as the designated driver company called BeMyDD. The company offers its services in cities all over the country, including Orlando.

The way the service works is, you call the hotline for a designated driver. Two drivers will show up in a car at your location. One driver will drive you home in your own vehicle while the other follows. The company also offers a single driver pick up and drop off service.

It is important to keep in mind that even if you stay off the roads entirely for the evening, you may still run the risk of legal trouble if you allow your guests to leave your house intoxicated.

Laws regarding your own liability vary by state and while Florida’s law is more lenient, the statute says that if you are serving alcohol to minors and they get hurt, injure others or cause property damage, you can be held liable. This law also applies if you serve alcohol to ‘habitual drinkers.’ Habitual alcohol use is when an individual drinks out of habit, and not solely for enjoyment.
